5.0 out of 5 stars Very small, 24mm equivalent lens, August 5, 2011

I have been using this lens with a preproduction loaner NEX-C3. Review on that camera to come soon...

This lens is in a lot of ways a tour de force, showing that a good quality lens and sensor package can be made small. Most casual shooter will probably head for the 18-55mm zoom, but this 16mm lens (crop factor is 1.5, so it's a 24mm equivalent in 35mm land) would make a good carry lens for a sort of retro-rangefinder camera. This could get you all sorts of street shots with a very pocketable camera, and enough resolution to crop to the image you really wanted. With the NEX-C3, low light levels weren't a problem, and that would go nicely with this low profile lens and not using the flash.

Details: 49mm filter thread

5.0 out of 5 stars great picture quality in a little package, October 21, 2010

I got this lens as part of Sony's special saving on bundle pricing with Nex-5. At first I was hesitant because of some reviews that i had read online about its poor IQ overall. Well, after using it and pixel peeping with the RAW image files i can say that this lens produced outstanding result. Sharpness is on par with Canon's 17-55mm 2.8 lens, which is saying a lot. There is definitely a jump in quality when you go from Sony's own 18-55mm kit lens with this one. This lens gives you a good idea what the Nex's APS-C sensor is capable of- a DLSR-like image quality without the bulk. I can't wait for the other E-mount lenses to come out.

So not only does this lens reduce the overall bulk of the Nex-5 camera system (can put in pockets more easily), it also gives you result that you will be proud of.

ps. low-light is impressive but i think it's combination of sony's low-light capable sensor and this lens' measly 2.8 aperture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sony 16mm f2.8 Lens for NEX, December 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Sony SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 Wide-Angle Lens for NEX Series Cameras (Electronics)
Just received this lens for Christmas and it appears to be a good quality product. I have not run any significant tests on it or compared results with my 18-55mm zoom or my 18-200mm zoom. It is a nice compact size and weight, a good all around lens if you like wide angle shooting. This lens would be the equivalent of a 24mm on a 35mm camera.

While an f2.8 is not particularly fast, it is fine on the NEX since the camera can handle slow speed shots in other ways. For real wide angle shooters, Sony's Fish-Eye adapter will attach to this lens as well as the 18-55mm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very cool budget lens.Very decent optics., December 2, 2010

This review is from: Sony Alpha SAL35F18 A-mount Wide Angle Lens (Black) (Electronics)
I got this lens for my new Sony A55. First I was going to buy Sony 50mm/1.4, but after realizing how much I've already spent, I decided to slow down a little. After being used to quality build of SAL 18-250 lens I was just amazed how cheap this lens looked like when I took it out the box. It felt like this thing was build for Toys-R-Us. When I set to Manual focus and turned ring around - those little (plastic) gears inside were grinding pretty loudly. Build is comparable to kit lens. It is ... plastic. Made in China.

But when I attached lens to camera and started taking pictures, I calmed down. :) All is fine, optics are very good, lens is sharp. Just, do not confuse "SAM" abbreviation on the lens with word "silent". Focusing is not silent at all. But not too terrible loud either. Bokeh is very nice too. I got it mostly for night video/still shots, but in daylight this lens is very good too. Colors are not distorted, no obvious defects in optics. It is super light - 6oz... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars a must-have lens for sony shooters, March 30, 2011

This review is from: Sony Alpha SAL35F18 A-mount Wide Angle Lens (Black) (Electronics)
35mm is close to the ideal "normal" (neither wide-angle nor telephoto) field of view on APS-C DSLR's. It very closely approximates the field-of-view of a 50mm lens on a film SLR, which is a focal length that people have found tremendously useful for decades. It's been easy to find 50mm primes, both new and used, for quite some time -- but 50mm with the 1.5x crop factor of a DSLR is kind of an awkward focal length, useful but not ideal for that one, everyday prime lens.

Before this lens, sony shooters looking for a "normal" prime had some options, none of which were very appealing. The sigma 30mm/f1.4 is an OK lens, but relatively pricey for mediocre performance. You could look for a 20 year old minolta 35mm/f2, but those were fetching a small fortune on the used market. You could use the old minolta 28mm/f2.8, but that was never a very strong lens, and not fast for a prime either. The sony/minolta 35mm/f1.4G was a nice option if you wanted to drop $1300... Read more

Compared to the kit lens, I was surprised at how much sharper and detailed the images are from this prime lens. The build quality is comparable to the kit lens, all plastic, which does make it very light which is a plus. I noticed the focus motor is also a little smoother and quieter as well. Keep in mind that at the maximum aperture the depth of field is extremely narrow. This requires critical focus accuracy which the A55 seems to accomplish effortlessly even in low light.

This lens seems like a great bargain based on my results vs. cost.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best wide angle primes at a bargain price.I, August 15, 2010
By
I am using this lens on a Canon 5D Mark II. I have several zoom lenses in this range, but was looking for a fast, superwide prime. The choice would be this or the Canon 14L II. This is the same as the Samyang, rebranded.
After receiving the lens, I ran some tests against 16-35 2.8, and sigma 12-24, and was floored. The corner to corner sharpness of this lens is fantastic. I peaks at around 5.6, but the corners at 2.8 are better than the other 2 lenses at f11. the microcontrast and color is very good. The barrel distortion is hefty, and complex with a mustache distortion, however, often not well visible in landscape, but visible in architectural images. It is correctable using a $25 program called ptlens, and there is also a profile for acr 6.1 out there, which works great. It is an absolute bargain. I purchased a focus confirmation chip for 14 from ebay, glued it on, and I get focus confirmation too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value - the best in its class, November 10, 2010
By
Sanity Advocate (Houston, TX United States) - See all my reviews
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
I purchased this lens several months ago to use on my Canon 5d mark 1 camera. This is by far the sharpest, most flare-and color fringing-resistant lens in its class. I owned the Nikon 14-24mm lens and this lowly lens beats the Nikon hands down on all counts, exept vignetting (easily correctable in Photoshop) and distortion - but get a PT Lens software, which has this lens correction pre-programmed in its database and distortion becomes a non-issue.

Advantages:

Solidly built, operates smoothly, light (under 450 grams), much more compact than Nikon 14-24mm, incredible resolution, color balance and color fringing resistance - simply crushes Nikon 14-24mm (my personal experience and comparison and also see independent reviews on the Net), no flare, even when shooting straight into the Sun.

Disadvantages:

Fully manual - no auto anything, including the aperture (not an issue for this ultra-wide lens and actually is an advantge, since it greatly... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Sharpest lens I ever used, but check for issues, May 23, 2011

This review is from: Rokinon 14mm F2.8 Ultra Wide Angle Lens with Automatic Chip for Nikon (Black) (Electronics)
This is the new version with the auto-exposure chip (only for Nikon mount) and UMC coating. My impressions:

Pros:
-Sharp, sharp, sharp. Even at f/2.8, this lens is sharp. At its sharpest aperture, f/5.6, it's sharp corner-to-corner on an APS-C camera.
-Very good build quality. Solid weighty feel, brass mount, and smooth dampened focus ring.
-By far the least expensive 14mm around.
-No problems with auto-exposure or focus confirmation (including the electronic rangefinder function on newer Nikon bodies)
-FX or DX

Cons:
-Cheap rear cap fits a little loose. I swapped mine with a Nikon cap.
-Has significant mustache-type barrel distortion in the middle of the frame. Not a lens for architectural photography. However, this can be mostly corrected in post-processing (with the $25 software PTLens, or user-created Lightroom profiles on the net).

Some considerations:
-Like some other ultra wide-angle lenses, the... Read more
