3.0 out of 5 stars Not better than Nikon, but much cheaper., December 23, 2007
This review is from: Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG IF HSM Aspherical Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Nikon SLR Cameras (Electronics)
Sigma has been much maligned by the Nikon-brand lens snobs, and not without good reason. The build quality and optical clarity of the average Nikon lens easily trounces the average Sigma.

This particular Sigma lens has been in my bag since 2004 (three years now) and has performed flawlessly in dusty, humid, and rainy conditions. I can't say that about every Nikon lens I have owned.

Don't get me wrong-- this is not a flawless lens. It is weather sealed enough, but I doubt it would survive being dunked in water the way some (but not many) Nikon lenses would. It focuses faster than many Nikon lenses, but slower than competing Silent Wave Motor Nikons. It is quieter than any non-SWM Nikons, and almost as quiet as SWM. It focuses as well as any Nikon f/4.5-5.6 lens in similar lighting conditions.

Now for the flaws. It has more chromatic aberration than Nikon's 12-24mm DX and 14-24mm FX lenses. It isn't as sharp, especially near the edges. But if... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Extreme wide angle, but..., September 10, 2009
This review is from: Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG IF HSM Aspherical Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Nikon SLR Cameras (Electronics)
I use this lens on a full frame camera (D700) - so the review is geared for full frame users. There are wider choices (with relative advantages / disadvantages) on the cropped sensor side - don't get this lens for DX.

Pros:
- the widest rectilinear lens for full frame. The difference in coverage between 12 and 14mm (the next closest candidate, at least for Nikon) is HUGE (from looking at it - at least 15% - 20% more on 12mm).
- vibrant color rendition. I don't know why this is - but compared at the same settings with the 24-120 and a 50mm 1.8, the reds rendered by Sigma are deeper and more vibrant.
- relatively light - only a pound (compare at an arm breaking 2.1 pounds for Nikon 14-24)
- good build construction.
- relatively inexpensive.

Cons:
- Horrible vignetting. The corners are significantly (2+ stops) darker than the center.
- Corner softness at any aperture (just horrible wide open)
- Overall image sharpness. I... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent ultrawide, May 8, 2007
By
This review is from: Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG IF HSM Aspherical Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Nikon SLR Cameras (Electronics)
The Sigma 12-24 is an excellent ultrawide. It is very sharp with very little barrel or pincushion distortion. It is a true 12-24 fullframe with a film SLR (love it with my Nikon N80) or full frame digital slr, and effectively an 18-36 with an APS-sized sensor digital SLR. Excelleent ultrawide for architecture, landscapes etc. At 12mm though, it is so wide that you must be careful of distortion introduced by shooting off-level. This is not to say this particular lens is faulty and distorts, but would be true of any ultrawide lens with this wide degree of coverage. While I have heard much talk of supposed poor Sigma quality control, I have no qualms at all about this lens - It is sturdy, tough, smooth and has performed flawlessly for me for years.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bang for few bucks..., May 14, 2005
This review is from: Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras (Electronics)
This is a cheap lens - old design, very plastic - that can prove terribly useful for those on a budget who want a wider perspective, especially on 1.6x crop factor dSLRs.

I learned about "cheap" with this lens - broke the focus ring the day after delivery. But I blame myself too, and the replacement's given me no trouble, though I think my first one was a bit sharper than the second. (Update: calibration of the replacement optimized my performance to match or exceed that first one that I broke. It now performs *very well* wide-open at f/2.8, and beyond belief at f/5.6.)

By many standards, this lens will match or exceed zoom lens of comparable price (as a prime lens should). Autofocus is a little buzzy, but the main time you'll notice is when it loses its bearing and suddenly lurches way off target. Mostly, focuses quickly enough and well. Some chromatic aberration in worst-case scenarios, but nothing awful or unexpected. Vignetting, even on a 1.6x crop,... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Mr Watson, come here, I need to see you, June 16, 2010

This review is from: Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras (Electronics)
I was on the lookout for a good-quality autofocus wide angle lens for my Canon 5D MkII, and this seemed to be the best option. Canon's telephoto lenses are generally superb and they make some good zooms, but the company has traditionally had trouble with the wider focal lengths. I can't justify the expense of a 24-70mm f/2.8 or the 24mm f/1.4, and the 17-40mm and 16-35mm seem either underwhelming or too specialised for what they are. The 28-135mm didn't appeal to me, ditto the 20-35mm f/3.4-4.5, the 24-85mm didn't impress me when I owned a copy. The non-L wide primes include the 20mm f/2.8, which no-one seems to like; the 35mm f/2, which lots of people like but doesn't seem great in the full-frame corners; the 28mm f/2.8, which I have tried and hated, and the 28mm f/1.8, which doesn't appeal to me at all. The 24mm f/2.8 seemed to be the dark horse, based on the tests I have seen, and so I found one cheap and snapped it up.

It is surprisingly good. Not excellent, but... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars If only vigneting could be reduced..., December 6, 2005
By
This review is from: Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras (Electronics)
I bought this lens to have a fixed, light lens to use with my digital EOS 10D (due to 1.6 crop factor it has the same viewing angle than a 45 mm lens, in the "standard" range). I use it in "keep it simple" photographic sessions.

Resolution and overall image quality are quite decent; but it has one main drawback: vigneting is non-negligible at f/2.8, even inside the digital cropped frame (so I can't guess how bad could it be in a full 35 mm frame). At f/4 it becomes usable. I've done a very informal comparison with Canon EF 17-40 L and both lenses give comparable results at f/4.

Design is old, but effective; it has a depth of field scale. I'd like it to have a more silent focus engine, or a somewhat more robust build, but it does its job.

4.0 out of 5 stars significant improvement over the previous lens, December 3, 2007

This review is from: Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra-Wide Angle Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras (Electronics)
as soon as i received it, i set my camera up on a tripod and shot the same picture, first with the old canon 14mm, and then with the new. the improvement in the new lens in terms of corner to corner sharpness was really significant. the only thing that was somewhat disappointing, was that the new lens had considerably more fringing around high-contrast edges. i shot an image of an interior with a view out the window and there was a very wide, highly saturated blue fringe even in the center of the image. the old 14mm experienced fringing too, but rarely in the center of the image, and even at the edges, was not as extreme as it is in the center of the new lens. granted the difference in luminance was quite extreme between the interior and exterior (at least 5 stops) so this is not a problem that would effect every image, but it is something to be aware of. even with this problem, i would still recommend the new lens again as the increase in sharpness far outweighs the... 5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Wide Prime, November 17, 2010
By
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra-Wide Angle Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras (Electronics)
This is the sort of lens that you buy if you know that you want to buy this sort of lens. If you're casually thinking of buying glass, this probably isn't for you. It's the best wide prime for Canon if you're looking for something that can autofocus. The difference between the 14mm of this lens and 16mm of the 16-35 is huge. The results are impressively sharp, and then lens is far more compact than the zooms which provide your only other options. If you want a wide lens on full frame and aren't concerned about your budget, this is your choice.

I have no idea why there's only a 6-blade aperture in this thing. I think they could have done much better. It doesn't usually matter, but it makes bright point sources look ... interesting. Not necessarily bad, but interesting. The effect on bokeh is negligible, since you're not going to get much bokeh.

Minor quibbles come from the front element, which of course doesn't accept filters, though there's a gel holder in the... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning rectilinear wide angle, March 15, 2011

This review is from: Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra-Wide Angle Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras (Electronics)
This is an outstanding lens. A bit pricey... but nothing else really compares to it.

This is a "rectilinear" wide angle lens. This means that horizontal and vertical lines in a photograph will remain straight, rather than curving as they would in a "curvilinear" (aka "fish-eye") lens. This is the widest rectilinear wide-angle lens made by Canon (one of the very widest on the market.) It creates stunning architectural or landscape photographs. If you want to see samples of images taken with this lens, flickr has a group dedicated to it (as they do for most lenses). Search Flickr for a group named "Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM"

The lens physically has excellent build quality. The tulip-style lens hood is metal and is a permanent part of the lens body. It is not removable (and it comes with a special lens cap designed to work with the tulip hood). There are no front filter threads (such is typical of very wide angle lenses like this one.) however there is a... Read more
