Canon EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

Product Description

A highly portable lens with high optical performance and a light weight of 12 oz. (340g). A very practical ultra-wide-angle zoom. The large front lens group minimizes peripheral darkening, and the flare-blocking diaphragm minimizes flare. Also, with lens group 2 being the zoom group, distortion is corrected.

  • EF mount; ultra-wide zoom lens
  • Inner focusing; full-time manual focus
  • 20-35mm focal length
  • f/3.5-4.5 maximum aperture
  • Ring-type UltraSonic Motor (USM)

This review is from: Canon EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lensfor Canon SLR Cameras (Electronics)
The main problem with this lens is the speed, or the lack thereof. Compared to the EF 20/2.8, it's only a half stop slower but compared to the EF 35/2, it's one and a half stops slower. While this is not a big deal if you're shooting outside, you have a problem in low light environments. Secondarily, if you're shooting a small sensor DSLR, you're not getting the wide angle benefits of this lens.

For film or for full-frame 35mm sized sensor DSLR users, this is a good choice if you can live with the primary limitation of the slow speed. Optically, it's not bad at all. It has more distortion than an architectural photographer will want but if you're mainly shooting architecture you probably wouldn't be attracted to this lens anyway. As a reportage lens or a travel lens, it will serve well. Although it's relatively large--especially with the dinner plate sized lens hood in place--it's a lightweight. Build quality is industry-standard consumer grade for Canon. Which... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for travel, July 20, 2003

This review is from: Canon EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lensfor Canon SLR Cameras (Electronics)
This is a wonderful lens. It is especially nice for travel photos in cities, indoors, and for some landscapes. You also need to get a hood because of the wide angle of view. In addition, you need a filter to protect the lens as well as function as a filter -haze or polarizer. The filter must be a special wide angle filter (thin metal ring) and you won't be able to attach the lens cap over the filter. Small price to pay, however.

This review is from: Canon EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lensfor Canon SLR Cameras (Electronics)
This lens is good for those who are looking to get decent wide angle but don't have the budget for the EF 17-40 f/4L. In order to beat the quality of this lens you need to spend almost double.

I used the 20-35 on my Rebel XT which makes it equivalent to 32 to 56mm. It's not as wide as the EF-S 18-55 that came with the camera but the quality is much better. The ring type USM focuses fast and quietly. Overall, a great value for the price.

If you can afford it, I would step up to the 17-40 f/4L which gives you a little more range. If not, this is a decent alternative.

Another option to consider is the EF 20mm f/2.8. It's slightly faster but costs about $100 more.

Product Description

The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM is a lens dedicated to digital SLR cameras with APS-C size image sensors, offering a large aperture and Sigma's Optical Stabilization and providing a high level of optical performance.

The combination of the large f/2.8 maximum aperture and anti-shake function makes capturing exceptional photos of still subjects in very low light quite achievable, and the wide 18mm focal length is well suited for indoor photography with digital SLR cameras. This lens offers superior peripheral brightness as well as a relatively compact, light construction. Two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements and three aspherical lens elements provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. The Sigma Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting.

Designed with inner focusing and inner zooming systems, high image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range along with an easy time handling the lens. This lens' minimum focusing distance of 11.8" (30cm) throughout the entire zoom range and maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.1 are quite impressive against their class competition.

  • Exclusively for Digital SLR Cameras
  • Optical Image Stabilization
  • Fast HSM Internal Autofocus
  • Ideal For Portraits and Snaps

4.0 out of 5 stars Cost Effective; But Not Quite Perfect., June 27, 2010

This review is from: Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 SLD Aspherical DC OS HSM Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, XTi, XS, XSi, T3i, T3, T2i, T2, T1i, 5D, 7D, 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D & 60D Digital SLR Cameras (Electronics)
I've been shooting with this lens for well over 3 years now on a Digital Rebel XT. My original Canon kit lens died on me after about 200k exposures, and the Canon replacement now costs twice as much. (it was even more three years ago) So I ended up getting the Sigma as a replacement. Its a solid lens for the money, but its not without its drawbacks. As other reviewers have mentioned the auto focus isn't great, and on more than one occasion I've had to switch to manual focusing during shooting to get an in focus image. Especially when shooting a subject that is moving fast or in low light. Also the focus ring is too loose for my liking, which can make it hard to get an in focus image manually of fast moving subjects when the auto focus fails. I also don't believe the optics are quite as good as they could be, especially when compared to their Canon counterparts. However I assumed this would be the case when I bought the lens. On the other hand, this lens has long out lived its Canon... Read more

This review is from: Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 SLD Aspherical DC OS HSM Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, XTi, XS, XSi, T3i, T3, T2i, T2, T1i, 5D, 7D, 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D & 60D Digital SLR Cameras (Electronics)
The image quality of the pictures is average (tested with Canon D450), but the bad part was Autofocus performance. It failed 50% of the time and worked mostly on the pictures were objects were at the same distance from the camera. If not, the AF sets for the lower part of the image most of the time (tested for several days with the same effect in all image conditions).

Bought it thinking it would be great wide angle lens, it was not much better than my Canon 18-55mm lens that came with my T1i. If your looking to replace 18-55mm lens, then I would buy this one because the price is unbeatable. As far as construction, I have to give it to Sigma. The feel and weight distribution slightly better than the Canon lens.

In addition, it came with a hood. really nice add-on. If your looking to replace your 55mm lens, this is the one. If you want an extra good lens, this is the one. If you want Wide Angle Shots, not the one.

Overall, I am keeping this lens, just in case, my orginal breaks down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gives excellent results with a simple Photoshop adjustment, June 5, 2010

This review is from: Digital 0.45X Professional Wide Angle Lens 58 MM with Macro High Definition (Electronics)
Two tricks make this adapter really useful and versatile: a step-down converter ring, and one simple Photoshop adjustment.

It converts my 28mm equivalent lens to what I roughly estimate is a 21mm lens--a big increase in angle of view.

I got one of these adapters for my Olympus micro 4/3 camera, to try out as an alternative to a $600 true wideangle.

The big problem is substantial barrel distortion. Also, there is chromatic aberration in the corners and some vignetting (darkening in those corners). Now, here's the trick: Photoshop Elements (and, no doubt, other photo management programs) can eliminate the barrel distortion in: Filter/Correct Camera Distortion/Remove Distortion (try +20 to +30%). This has the huge additional benefit of pulling the corners out of the picture without reducing the wide angle of view--the very corners where both the chromatic aberration and vignetting occur! Crop to make the picture rectangular, and you have reduced... Read more

I bought this adapter primarily for use as a wide-angle lens once attached to my stock EOS 18-55mm lens that came with my Canon EOS Rebel XSi. On receiving it I found it doubles as a macro adapter (you just need to unscrew the wide-angle adapter). For the price it is a good deal, it costs below $30 and any decent fish-eye or wide-angle lens system will cost a good deal above $100. However there are performance issues which I will highlight here. Though I must mention, I found nothing amiss with the macro adapter - it had a crisp but narrow depth of focus, which I think is desirable in macro photography in which you require only your subject to be clearly focused. However the wide-angle adapter was a different story. I usually get crisp images with the stock EOS 18-55mm lens that came with my camera, the borders of distant objects are sharp and clear. However after attaching the wide-angle adapter the borders of distant objects tended to be hazy (thicker borders that looked like a... Read more

I bought this item based on the reviews...and because the wide lens that I wanted was not available. It's a nice cheap sub but you can't use the auto focus on your lens and if you have to focus quickly it's not a good sub.

So. It you are going to take the time to focus on every shoot then it's a good sub...but if you are changing positions and going from shot to shot then best to go with an original lens.
