4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the price, September 18, 2009

This review is from: Opteka .35x HD Wide Angle Fisheye Lens for Canon (Electronics)
Previous reviews are mostly accurate. This is a bit soft around the corners, but it's also 1/10 of the price of a high quality true fisheye. I do like that it's pretty well built. It's at least solid and won't fall apart. I use it with a Canon Digital Rebel XS and it kicks out some pretty cool effects and decent quality pictures as well. The one downfall to me personally is that most of the cool effect of this lens is found near the edges, right about where the picture starts losing quality. But on that note I still believe it's money well spent to see if you want to invest in the higher dollar fisheyes. Even if you don't use it much you're still sure to get your money's worth out of it, so you really can't go wrong. I personally like this lens for reasons such as good quality pictures, good construction, and the ease of use. This is an excellent beginning fisheye and it's a lot of fun to use. Just make sure you keep it at 18mm or you'll start losing the effect, but it's easy to... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice add-on for your camera!, November 20, 2009
This review is from: Opteka .35x HD Wide Angle Fisheye Lens for Canon (Electronics)
I bought this lens converter a few days ago, and was very skeptical about it. I mean, fisheye lenses are usually extremely expensive, so what could I expect of a $29 lens?
Well, after playing with it, I have to say that I am quite impressed! If you are looking for some fun and don't want to spend hundreds of dollars, go with this product!

I have a Canon Rebel XS and this add-on works perfectly with my camera since there is a converter ring for a 52-58. I use it on my 18-55 lens and I can get some very nice images. If you stick to 18 especially, you will get the full effect of the fisheye. Obviously the more you zoom, the least the distortion will appear. Also, make sure you are taking pictures with plenty of light, otherwise your pictures will be dark.

So, for the price, I am really positively surprised and it is a fun little lens to play with! also, it comes in a little protection bag, which is nice and it seems to be well built. I was expecting something... Read more

This lens attachment does virtually that same thing as wide angle lenses costing $400+. For the amateur, this is all you really need. Little blurry around the edges, but clear in the center. Since I work strictly for the web (604 pixels wide), this gives adequate clarity, and it is vastly better than having no wide angle at all. Keep in mind this is a passive LENS ATTACHMENT, not a standalone lens. It screws on the front of the standard 18-55 lens that probably came with your camera (in my case a Sigma 18-50mm). The attachments is made for 52mm threads, but it comes with an adapter ring for 58mm threads (and a larger adapter whose size I forgot). Probably the only difference between various models of this lens (Canon, Nikon, etc.) is the adapter ring. Your original lens does all the focusing, zooming, etc. When you zoom out to 18mm, you see a nearly full fisheye circle surrounded by black (pretty close to a 180-degree view). When you zoom in, you essentially get a wide angle lens for... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Best of the "affordable" Fisheyes I've found, February 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Rokinon FE8M-C 8mm F3.5 Fisheye Lens for Canon - Black (Camera)
Fisheye lenses are very fun - they give a totally different perspective compared to just about any lens out there. The most common type seem to be the "circle" type, which product a big circle in the center of your image (with the fisheye image inside of that). On digital cameras with a crop-factor (like the Canon Rebel series, XXD series and even 7D), this can sometimes result in what looks like a circle with the top and bottom cut off.. not the most enjoyable image.

That's where this one comes in - the Rokinon produced a rectangular fisheye image - there is no "circle" as with other types of fisheye lenses, but you still get that great fisheye look (distortions and all).

You might see other similar looking (and priced) Fisheye lenses available out there.. Bower, Pro-Optic, Samyang, Rokinon, Vivitar, Falcon. These are ALL THE SAME LENS - Samyang, the manufacturer, simply re-brands it and changes the colors a bit (For example, look at:... Read more

Well what can I tell you, this lens is awesome, I've testes it and let me tell you some of the results I noticed:

- The amount of flare (even pointing the lens towards the sun) is minimal, it really surprised me in a very positive way.
- It doesn't darkens the corners or produce vignetting effect AT ALL!
- The quality in the final pictures is superb, the pictures are crisp sharp even in the edges!
- Unlinke the peleng lens, the rokinon does fill the entire frame of the picture with no empty corners.
- It does not have the annoying lock ring of the peleng.
- When you handle the lens it feels great, the build quality is great and the rubber grip in the focus ring is awesome, its heaviness makes it feel like a solid rock and well built pice of glass; and, unlike the peleng, it does look modern!
- The colors look nice and saturated in the final pictures.

I loved this one, and I can truely say that this lens will exceed your expectations,... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars An underrated great lens from Samyang, November 1, 2010
By

This review is from: Rokinon FE8M-C 8mm F3.5 Fisheye Lens for Canon - Black (Camera)
If you are reading the review for this lens, you are looking at a highly underrated lens. The performance of this lens has surprised a lot of critics including Ken Rockwell and photozone. If you are out there shooting with fisheye, you definitely should not mind about manual focus and manual aperture. Otherwise, go ahead and spend 3 times as much of your hard earned money on Sigma or at least 4 times as much on the new Canon 8-16mm L which hasn't been shipped yet. BTW the price of this Samyang fisheye has dropped to $263. Hello? How much does the plasticy Canon kit lens cost? For the quality of its optics and build (metal), the Samyang is a real bargain. The first thing I did with this lens was to shoot toward the sun and confirmed that flares were very well controlled. You get a nice single streak of flares and they are not all over the place. Just be realistic with laws of physics, you cannot expect no flare at all with such wide angle even with nano or whatever coating. This... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars could be sharper on full-frame, August 2, 2006
By

This review is from: Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras (Electronics)
I've used this lens both on 1.6x crop (Digital Rebel XT) and full frame (5D and EOS 3) cameras.

On the 1.6x crop, the 20mm focal length looks like 32mm. I personally find that to be a wonderful focal length for general purpose use, and the f2.8 is acceptably fast for some indoor / low-light situations.

On full-frame, the lens is amazingly wide, and can be challenging to frame an interesting picture. Nevertheless, sometimes you need the lens to be that wide, so it's great to have. On the downside, the lens loses sharpness toward the edges, and is more evident on full-frame cameras than on 1.6 crop cameras.

This lack of sharpness is not always a big deal, as the edges of a photo are usually not the focal point.

I'm overall happy with it, and when I want wide, I usually grab my 20mm over my 17-40mm zoom.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's better than it's made out to be!, September 15, 2006
This review is from: Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras (Electronics)
If there is one thing in this universe that is more rare than gold, it is a positive review of this particular lens. Now I don't know if I just got lucky and got a good sample. But this has been a GREAT lens for me. Sharpness is actually REALLY good. Now one of the BIG complaints of this lens is poor edge sharpness. But I have not found this to be a severe problem - especially when stopped down somewhat. And, since a lens of this focal length is more likely to be used for scenics or arcitectural use than action shots, this isn't the end of the world.

But there is more going for this lens than sharpness. Distortions are VERY low for a lens of this focal length. You are NOT going to get anything nearly as good from a zoom. Also, color saturation and contrast are EXCELLENT - FAR better than, say, an EF-S 17-85mm lens. Colors REALLY come alive with this lens compared to most zooms. And chromatic aberrations are all but non-existant.

Construction also seems to be... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars sharp wide-angle lens for cropped sensors, February 23, 2008
By
Mark (Naugatuck, CT, United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras (Electronics)
If you want a wide-angle lens for a Rebel that doesn't have lots of distortion, this is great. I have taken some very nice shots with this hand-held indoors and outside. The first time I took a stopped-down shot indoors on a tripod, I was really impressed. Because of the crop factor and depth of field, it's eye-popping sharp all over with great color saturation. It costs a good amount, but it's one of the most useful lenses I have.

Drawbacks - A chunk of that price is for the 20mm optics of which we only see the central portion with a cropped sensor. The lens hood is extra. The lens diameter is 72mm so buying a polarizer lens will set you back.

Bottom line: I would give up my 85mm f1.8 and 50mm f1.4 - and maybe even my 35mm f2 - before I would part with this lens. Great for landscapes on cropped sensor cameras. People who have complained about this lens must have gotten a bad build.
